I am a Catholic, born into a Catholic family in a predominantly Catholic country. I was baptized in the faith before I was one year old, and I was educated in Catholic institutions all of my life. So, it isn't surprising that I grew up unaware of other religions and faiths. It isn't surprising that I had no idea what it was like to interact with someone who did not recognize Jesus Christ as God. The way I viewed those with a different faith was shaped by the stereotypes portrayed on television, in the movies, in other media. Even worse, I forgot they existed, and failed to acknowledge the diversity that exists in our society.

More than once, I heard it said that "a good Muslim is a dead Muslim." Because that statement had no direct impact on my life, I would brush it off whenever I heard it. I was apathetic to those hateful words. It was only when I started working with the World Youth Alliance (WYA), an international youth NGO that focuses on dignity and human rights, that I became exposed to young people of different faiths — Buddhists, Jews, Muslims. It was when I started working with these people that I realized how painful and unjust some loosely used phrases can be.

In WYA, we begin our conversations by making a conscious effort to focus on the one thing we have in common: dignity. From there we would start talking about school, boys (or girls), parents, and, of course, our faith in humanity. We all believe that a person has dignity. We believe that we all have value and have the capacity to do good. And from this proceeds the realization that we are not so different from each other after all.

Over the years, I have gained many good friends. Four of them happen to be Muslim: Aliah, Yusoph, Aldin and Annisa. All four are passionate about making a difference in this world and they are all passionate about their faith. They have made me more sensitive to everything that has been happening in Muslim Mindanao, in the Middle East and in other areas where there is cultural diversity. They have been eager to share their faith with me and to help me understand their culture, practices and beliefs.

"You guys are always inviting us to your Christmas parties. We want to invite you to our holiday celebrations as well." This was how Aldin explained his invitation for us to join in the celebration of Eid'l Fitr a few years ago. Of course, it went deeper than that: They wanted to share their food, their decorations, traditions and faith. They wanted to share what moves them, the center of their being, which is their belief in Allah, the one God.

We had our first Eid'l Fitr celebration in 2006, and we celebrated it again last year. We invited our friends and family, other members of WYA and shared in their festivities. They served us Maranao cuisine: delicious fish cooked in coconut milk and spices, beef rendang and pastries. To help us understand their faith and their heritage, we played games and made casual conversation with other Muslim guests. You tend to forget the Muslim stereotype constantly being hammered into our consciousness by the media when you are face to face with a warm, friendly, young person, who happens to be faithful to Allah.

What scares a lot of people about Muslims is that they do not know much about them as a people — who they are, what they believe, how they live. When we are not informed (or we are misinformed by those who exaggerate or focus on fundamentalists or ride on the "CNNization" of things) we become fearful. Nothing is scarier than the unknown, for not knowing is almost equivalent to not being in control. To be faced with someone who we think is very different scares a lot of people. They feel as if they have been pushed out of their comfort zones, and in an indirect way, they start thinking about their own absolutes and values in case they have to defend their own being.

It is this fear that drives us to do strange things, and sometimes even intolerable things. It is this fear that stops us from trying to make a connection with others, from trying to understand one another. It is this fear that stops us from reaching that point in which we realize we are all human, and that we have more in common than we may actually think.

Our Eid'l Fitr celebrations and Daw'as (talks that share the Muslim faith) are arranged by our Muslim friends. It is their contribution to building a more understanding culture, a more peaceful Philippines, and perhaps a better world. These celebrations have opened my eyes to a different culture and a different faith. At the same time they have helped me appreciate my own faith even more.

I love sharing the Christmas spirit with family and friends as well as people who smile at me as we go about shopping for gifts. I grew up with the notion that Christmas was for everyone, that you share what you have with everyone, even if all you have is a smile and a Merry Christmas greeting. Through the efforts of my friends, I have come to understand that Ramadan and Eid'l Fitr are somewhat similar: they are occasions for peace, reconciliation, thanksgiving and sharing. Similar values expressed in different ways to be experienced by all, because somehow we all seek to be faithful to our God, to our people and to the rest of humanity.

A Blessed Eid to Everyone.

The team will be divided into three basic groups - concept team, audience development team and publicity team. The concept team will be tasked to create the branding and design needs for the project. The audience development team will concentrate on recruiting participants, and assisting them throughout the registration process, and preparation of their participant kits. Happy Birthday Courtney Cox!!!

Jun. 15th, 2008 | 09:22 pm

I've always LOVED Jen Aniston as Rachel-- not as Rachel but more of being Jen Aniston haha. Phoebe, nah. Monica, not much. But now I kind of see some similarities between me and Monica.

Well, first, we have the same birth date. Second, she's loud...; third, she's competitive (she hates losing). HAH!

But this isn't about character analysis so imma cut this short. Happy 44th Birthday Courtney! weee. I will never forget the episode when Monica and Ross were battling over the Geller cup haha. it was soooo funny.

"We're playing for all the women out there. Think about all the men you've dated, think about all those men who made out with you while one eye was looking at the television."--Monica (last huddle before their win)

Something like that. Hindi ko memorize pero natawa ako sa paraan ng kanyang pag-motivate. HAHAHA. Nakakatawa lang. weee. useless post. :p

Out of Boredom

Jun. 3rd, 2008 | 10:04 am

I memorize Biyahe Tayo by heart. My favorite part is Francis M's rap.

During one of my job interviews, I was tasked to do a 15-minute presentation about the ailing Philippine tourism. Magaling, magaling, I thought. Yakang-yaka mengs...

Well, I didn't know what they thought of my presentation but all I can say is.... I'm still unemployed until this very day. So for all of you people unemployed, feeling unemployed or want to be unemployed... here's a little help for our ailing tourism. Tulong na rin natin ito kay Sec. Ace Durano hahaha. joke lang. ma-demanda pa ako.

But seriously, vote for the New 7 Wonders of the World.  Iboto ang apat na pambato ng Pilipinas!!!

Here's the link.

dumdeedumdeedumdee...

bum bum bum bum...

these are the two sets of letters i type more and more often these days. yes, still part of the workforce. haha. however, i do like the amount of free time i have these days. catching up with tv series and all, watching 2-3 different or same movies a week with friends, family and sherwin. haaay...

a lot has happened since my 2 weeks off the philippine islands. i thank PVT for the updates and chika moments.

then, there's the upload frenzy at my multiply account. it surprises me how vacation can make someone soooo deym lazy! hindi pa naman daw ako pabigat sa pamilya. don't get me wrong, 'coz i'm sure gonna miss this eternal sloth mode when i land my first job.

CHYEH! magkatrabaho ka nga muna trina coleen, bago ka pa-emote-emote jan!!!

today, my mom had an observation while i was reading Track A (woooo, kinilig ang WYA, i really TRIED, pero woooo dumugo utak ko kay Nafisi). back to my mom's observation... she told me that whenever i find myself in a hard or stressful situation, i would either bite my nails (normal), or "retract" my toes. hahahaha. she used "retract" kaya natawa ako kasi ang napicture ko pagong... geesh.

pero oo nga noh... napapaobserve na rin ako sa "clenching of my soles" unintentionally. wahaha. mom says her side of the family does that unconsciously.

SOS!!! matitigan nga ang mga paa ng mga tao, baka naman normal lang talaga sa lahat yan.

YES friends, observe yourselves and then tell me. siguradong matutuwa ako. hahaha. amazing this thing called life hahahaha.

ok, back to work.

dumdeedumdeedumdee...

bum bum bum bum...

how's unemployment?

Apr. 2nd, 2008 | 07:07 am

hello! after 1 month of no internet, i'm finally baccckkkk.

well, internet access wasn't much of a problem and i didn't have to worry about unemployment since as early as february, i already landed myself a job. i was hired as our home's official mayordoma. sweeping the floor, washing the back part of the house... bathing the 7 dogs, going back to binondo just to bathe the other 2 dogs. goodness. kung hindi pa ako pumayat sa lagay na ito, hindi ko na alam.

aside from my uploading frenzy there in multiply and updating myself through the year 2007 and early 2008 entries in livejournal, i found myself not knowing how to use YM already. ughhh. 1 month of no internet plus 2-3 months of ALMOST no YM temptation = lost.

belated happy april fools' day!

i'm leaving for tagaytay with theo mates today until tomorrow.

oohhh ohhh ohh, i have a job... Summer Camp 2008 of World Youth Alliance!!! Bicol May 12-18, so if anyone's interested, text me please. i'll be there. hahahaha. ginawang selling point.

hmmm, i have a quick question: will my n70 work in japan?

Today

10:50am

after the 10-minute philo orals, i'm done with my 1st sem! sir lagliva said i did very well. i might even beat my C+ record by getting my first ever B in philo orals.

11:30am
after therapy, doctor said my back's slowly improving. i am allowed to lift weights parallel to my spine na raw. oh happy day.

2pm
checking Aisis class scheds. i found out my 2 required subjects for EU and Marketing are in conflict. of course i couldn't drop the EU class, it's my friggin major. both subjects only offer 1 class for the subject. so ano na lang? simple, wala nang marketing minor. kung saan doon lang ako nagkaka-A.

talked to ate cai and mam peachy to see if may pagasa pa for a change in schedule. 100% sure na raw sila sa classes offered next sem. the EU department is only basing all classes with sir panahon's pereference of the TTH sched. the marketing department naman, doesn't wanna open another class 'coz they already offered 2 classes of mkt research last sem. and so i cry now. i just need panahon to free up his 430pm class on tth. please. sir, pasok ka na sa mwf please....

sabi nila, wala naman daw kuwenta ang minor. pero bakit umiiyak ako ngayon?!

i know it's not the end of my life, hello? pero gusto ko pala talaga mag-marketing...

dahil isip bata pa ako...

girls keep a different kind of score sheet as compared to what boys have. for the girl, it doesn't matter how small or how big the things the boy does for her, they all count as 1 point. as for the boy, he thinks big things matter. he thinks he only earns 1 point for a small thing and 30 points for a big thing. hence, he tends to focus into doing big things for girl. neglecting to do the small things which are, quite frankly, easier, and sometimes, what the girl really wants.

haaaayyyy... at dahil sakim ako...

I WANT TO BE FIRST!!!

PS: more posts of this kind will be added later :)

just a diagnosis, nothing permanent yet

Aug. 20th, 2007 | 07:31 am
mood: worried worried

unless a doctor says so... :(

my poor lower back finally took its toll on me. she said goodbye too many times before... oh i wish it was that simple. but my backaches really hit me last thursday as i was confirming the suspension of classes. shoti and i went to binondo to have my back checked. i knew there was a nearby diagnostic center somewhere in ortigas but my dad insisted. besides, we had to get some more stuff from our old house. so there i was in the clinic in the presence of people from all walks of life availing the services offered--blood tests, mammary glands checkup, etc. i signed up for an x-ray of the whole spine and got my report on the 18th (happy 23rd bab!). i wont go with the specifics, all i can say is, x-rays are major hassles when you have a serious back pain and the radiologist kept changing your position, making you carry these über heavy water bottles to emphasize your already hunched back. boooo the Cobb's method.

and so the diagnostic report came in and it had loads of medical terms that were understandable by my human brain.

x-ray of the whole spine:
1. thoracic dextroscoliosis is noted measuring 13-degrees by Cobb's method.
2. the vertebral bodies, pedicles, intervertebral disc spaces and spinous processes are intact.
3. lumbar lordosis is exaggerated
4. cervical lordosis and thoracic kyphosis are maintained
5. ferguson's angle is widened with the vertical line of weight bearing falling anterior to the sacral promontory

IMPRESSION: (plus my own interpretation, pampasaya lang haha)
1. mild thoracic dextroscoliosis

--ok, dextroscolio, i think, is a form of scoliosis. pinaganda lang. 13-degress abnormal ung akin. which is kinda big kasi kapag 90 degress na yan eh d parang nakatuwad na ako. exagg na un.

2. lumbosacral instability

--now here's what's making me praning, TRUE, my lumbar and sacrum areas are giving me the LOWER backaches, they keep "bumping" each other, which makes sitting down a hassle. with matching putok putok pa yan kapag umuupo ako at tumatayo. (at least if not seated on a chair)

3. normal cervical spine

--buti na lang, something positive. if this was not normal, mej wala nang kuwenta ang pagkababae ko. gusto ko pa naman magkaanak haha

BUT BUT BUT, these are just the things the radiologist was able to write. i'd have to go to my physician daw. badtrip naman, sigurado namang marunong na ang mga radiologists... doble gastos pa tuloy.

sherwin's been supportive and making a huge effort to cheer me up. he looked it up on the internet and comforted me. haha. sana nga back exercises lang kailangan ko. hindi na ako maghahanap sa internet, hihintayin ko na lang ang doktor sa huwebes. but as the radiologist told me, no more badminton, no more basketball, no more bowling.... no more everything stressful. just swimming.... putangina. pano na ang gym dates?! basketball dates?! leche.

sige isa pang pampasaya. the radiologist took one of the negatives and held it against the light. i saw it as well and commented... "grabe naman ang kakubaan ko..." then she said "leeg niyo po yan" hahahahahaha. sorry na.

i just made this public hahahahahahahahahaha.

some more updates:
1. akala ko makakasama na ako sa mga block studio pics kasi nalipat na ang immersion ko, oh but no! hahaha. nalipat siya sa mga dates na dun rin nalipat ang mga studio pics. teehee, bungisngis.
2. canceled immersion was a blessing since i was able to go out with sherwin on the 18th. MOA kami the whole afternoon until our soles bled. haha.
(happy 23rd bub, here's to more for us)
3. mom and i watched A Love Story--puwede na, malaswa haha. joke. maricel soriano pa rin! ang galeng umarte! no need for words and she can make me cry.
4. happy birthday to pato. :) hihi. will see you SMB soon.
